Gallo was in the crosswalk heading north across Highway 20 as Michael Payne, 37, turned left from Erie Street onto Highway 20. He apparently did not see Gallo.

The Oak Harbor police and fire departments, along with a deputy from the Island County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene.

The impact left a visible indentation on the hood of the Chevy. Gallo suffered injuries to her head, legs and feet and was transported to Whidbey General Hospital, said Oak Harbor Fire Department Battalion Chief Ray Merrill.

As of Thursday morning she was still at the hospital and “in stable condition,” reported hospital spokesperson Trish Rose.

An investigation is still pending on the incident and no citations have been issued.
