Two accidents close highway Wednesday

Traffic on Highway 20 was temporarily delayed at two places affecting Whidbey Island Wednesday.

Traffic on Highway 20 was temporarily delayed at two places affecting Whidbey Island around rush hour Wednesday afternoon due to vehicle accidents, including a camper rolling on its side and blocking the roadway.

The first of the accidents took place around 1:38 p.m., when a 5th wheel travel trailer rolled over on Highway 20 near Dewey Beach Drive. The trailer came to a rest blocking the highway, delaying traffic coming on and off Whidbey Island.

Washington State Trooper Kelsey Harding said the cause of the accident is unknown at this time. There were no injuries reported, and the vehicle that had been towing the trailer was driven from the scene.

Traffic was alternated through the site until the roadway was cleared around 5 p.m.

Later in the afternoon, a two-vehicle T-bone collision took place at the intersection of Swantown Road and Highway 20 in Oak Harbor.

Deputy Chief Mike Buxton with the Oak Harbor Fire Department said the two cars involved, a Kia and a Ford Mustang, both had visible front-end damage. Buxton said the cause had not yet been determined. Oak Harbor Police Chief Kevin Dresker said one driver was issued a citation for speeding.

The drivers, both males, sustained only minor injuries, Buxton said. Both vehicles were totaled and towed from the scene.

The intersection was closed and traffic diverted for around 20 minutes until the scene was cleared, Buxton said.
