Trailer park scuffle leads to charge

A 24-year-old Coupeville man is accused of trying to cut another man with a knife.

Prosecutors charged Jeremy Richner in Island County Superior Court Dec. 18 with second-degree assault with a deadly weapon. He could face up to a year and two months in prison if convicted.

Richner pleaded not guilty Jan. 2.

Deputy Robert Mirabal with the Coupeville Marshal’s Office responded to the report of a knife fight Dec. 14 and investigated the case.

Mirabal wrote that Richner was drinking at a friend’s house and became upset about a 41-year-old man who lives in the trailer park. Richner felt that the man — who happened to be involved in a high-profile standoff with police last year involving an explosive device — was dealing drugs, hanging out with kids and isn’t supposed to be living in the park, the report states.

The alleged victim said he heard a noise, went outside and saw a strange man, later identified as Richner, letting the air out of his tires. The man claimed the two of them got into a scuffle and Richner swung a knife at him, passing it just under his chin, Mirabal wrote.

The man said he pushed Richner to the ground, got the knife away and threw the weapon away, the report says.
