Oak Harbor’s One Heck of a Holiday Ride has been canceled over the possibility of strong winds.

The inaugural paddling event, sponsored by the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce, was set to take place with two races Saturday, Dec. 5.

However, the potential for high winds in the weather forecast prompted race organizers to cancel the event over safety concerns.

The plan is to hold the event in 2016, said Bill Walker, co-event director along with Ernie Wong.

About 30 people had registered for the event, which involves human-powered watercraft, kayaks, outriggers and paddleboards. Twenty of them had registered for the long course, which was going to stretch from south of Coupeville to Oak Harbor.
