Swimmers fare well

The Oak Harbor boys swim team made waves at the 4A North sectional swimming prelims on Thursday.

“I’m thrilled with how they’ve done,” head coach Emillie Sullivan said.

The Cats have at least one swimmer in every final heat held today, Feb. 15, except the 100-meter breaststroke.

In order to qualify for the state meet, swimmers must place at least second in the sectional finals or achieve a state qualifying time.

Junior Kyle Ciminski picked up two state qualifying times of 22.78 in the 50-meter freestyle and 55.36 the 100-meter fly. He is seeded second in both events coming into today’s competition.

Junior Jason Hunter is currently seeded second in two events, the 200-meter freestyle and the 500-meter freestyle.

Josh Lutrell also has a second seed in the 100-meter freestyle.

The 200-meter medley relay team, with Josh Walkuw, Ciminski, Lutrell and Hunter dropped three seconds and is seeded third behind Marysville-Pilchuck and Snohomish. The 200-meter free relay, consisting of the same swimmers, is also third, just three-tenths of a second off an automatic state qualifying time.

Even though everyone will not move on to the state meet, Sullivan is pleased with everyone’s efforts.

“There were a lot of personal bests,” she said. “Pretty much everyone dropped time.”

Oak Harbor has at least one swimmer in every consolation final race as well.

Today’s meet begins at 12:30 p.m. at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

“There are definitely going to be some fast and furious races to watch,” Sullivan said.

The state meet begins Thursday, Feb. 20-21 at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way.
