VAQ-129 plans a Pearl Harbor Commemoration Ceremony 11 a.m. Monday at the chapel at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.

The squadron is hosting the ceremony for the Pearl Harbor Survivors’ Association, North Cascade, Chapter 5. The event will include readings of the stories of our local Pearl Harbor survivors, Harold Johnson and Harold Shimer, and a presentation of a wreath to honor the 2,403 U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Army and civilian men and women who died that day.

Military personnel active and retired, their families, guests of the association, and members of the squadron are invited to attend.

On Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese bombers conducted a surprise attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbor, forcing the United States into World War II. During the attack, 12 ships were sunk or beached.

VAQ-129 is a non-deploying shore squadron, stationed at NAS Whidbey Island, and it is the Navy’s Fleet Replenishment Squadron for EA-18G Growlers.

Serving the United States Navy and United States Air Force, the Vikings of VAQ-129 train freshly pinned Naval Aviators and Naval Flight Officers. VAQ-129 also provides continuing education for aviators and naval flight officers who have been to the fleet.
