Cedarcrest came back to defeat the visiting Coupeville boys soccer team 3-2 in a shootout Thursday, April 29.

Coach Paul Mendes called it “a heart-breaker.” He said, “It was the best we ever played on that field. It was a heck of an effort and a good experience going through the shootout.”

Tony Jansen scored just four minutes into the match, assisted by Spencer Tack, and then Cedarcrest knotted the match just minutes before halftime.

Justin Adams scored early in the second half and Coupeville held the lead until the final minute when the Red Wolves put in the equalizer. Mendes said there was a collision in front of the goal, no call was made and Cedarcrest punched in the loose ball.

Neither team scored in the overtime period. In the shootout, the Wolves netted three of five tries. Tack, Adams and Ben Hayes hit for Coupeville.

Cedarcrest hit the game winner on their fifth and final shot to earn the win.

The Wolves complete conference play Saturday, May 1, at 2 p.m. at South Whidbey. Next Wednesday, May 5, they host the first round of the playoffs in a loser-out match at 4 p.m. If the Wolves win that contest, they will advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament Thursday and Saturday.
