The effort was there, but the Oak Harbor girls soccer team couldn’t break a streak of four consecutive shutouts, losing 3-0 to first-place Snohomish on Thursday night.
“I asked them to give 110 percent and they did,†OHHS head coach Gretchen Hanson said.
Battling a heavy rain the in first half the Wildcats fought toe-to-toe with the Panthers.
Oak Harbor out-shot Snohomish 4-3 in the half, but all shots were right at Panther goalkeeper Grace Lee.
“We’re getting them, they’re just not the best shot opportunities,†Hanson said.
Snohomish got very few shot opportunities behind a gritty defensive effort, but the Panthers broke onto the scoreboard a minute before halftime on a corner kick from Minde Politte to Brittany Marshall.
Taking a 1-0 lead out of the locker room, the Panthers came out energized in the second half. They kept the pressure on Oak Harbor, letting loose on 10 second-half shots.
Two of those were on deflected balls in front of the Wildcat goal and resulted in goals.
“Basically everything Snohomish put in was a fumbling ball that was in front of the net and they capitalized on it,†Hanson said.
Trailing 3-0 with 10 minutes to go, Oak Harbor refused to lay down. The Wildcats let loose on five shots on goal in that time, just missing on several occasions. Senior midfielder Abigail Pruss had a penalty shot deflect off the left upper-corner post and freshman Carson Mckole also got a couple of strong shots off.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 1-8-1 overall. They are eighth place out of nine teams with six games to go.
The Wildcats will play their next game at 7 p.m., Tuesday Oct. 11 at Monroe’s new stadium.
As for the hopes of the rest of the season, the Wildcats look to take one game at a time and keep improving.
“That’s exactly what we’re going to do, starting with Monroe,†Hanson said.
