The Shifty Sailors are celebrating a successful 2015 schedule by performing for locals at 7 p.m. in the Coupeville Rec Hall on Friday, Nov. 20.

In 2015, besides performing at their usual festivals, the group recorded its sixth CD, “Home of the Sails — Penn Cove,” and toured numerous seaports on Vancouver Island.

Often classified as a “shanty group,” director Vern Olsen is quick to point out that shanties, or work songs from the days of sail, are only a small part of their repertoire.

Olsen refers to the group as one that sings about anything dealing with the sea.

“Yes, we sing shanties, but it also includes songs about lighthouses, shipwrecks, fishing, military, songs of fishes and whales, and last but not least, drinking songs,” he said.

Besides not being a “shanty group,” they also are not a “barbershop ensemble” or a “men’s chorus.” They are a classification all their own.

Formed in 1993, the group just completed its 22nd year. Everyone in this group of 20 men resides on Whidbey.

During their 22 years they have recorded six CDs.

If you miss the Nov. 20 concert, you will have to wait until the spring to hear them again.

Tickets are $15. Those under 12 get in free.

Ticket are for sale at Wind & Tide in Oak Harbor; bayleaf, Far from Normal and Salty Mug in Coupeville; the Cheese Shop in Greenbank, and Moonraker Books in Langley.
