Police are looking for a suspicious man who may have tried to lure a 10-year-old girl into his car for nefarious purposes Monday morning.

Island County Sheriff Mike Hawley said that the girl was walking by herself to a school bus stop in the “Market Town” area of Summit Boulevard and Arwin Drive, which is near the Ault Field Navy base. The girl reported that at about 8:15 a.m. the man drove past, circled back and started talking to her from inside the car.

Hawley said the man asked the girl a series of questions, apparently trying to engage her in conversation. The man asked where her bus stop was and who sells Girl Scout cookies in the area. He then told her he had new fingernail polish in his car and asked if she would like to see it.

Hawley said the girl became more and more uncomfortable with the man and finally ignored him, which is when he drove off. The girl went to school without further problems.

Hawley said the girl’s description of the incident is very worrisome.

“It set off all types of alarm bells,” he said. “These are the types details little kids don’t make up.”

Although there is no criminal investigation, Hawley said his office is making “a full-court press” to identify the man. Deputies are distributing fliers in the neighborhood and other areas of the city. They’ve notified the media, Oak Harbor Police Office and the nearby Navy base.

Hawley said the girl was able to provide a good description of the suspect, though she was a little sketchy on his vehicle. The man is described as a white man in his early 20s, with brown eyes and short brown hair. He was wearing glasses and dressed in a red sweat shirt and tan pants.

The vehicle is described as white, small to mid-size, possible a small SUV.
