Seahawkers rally at wharf

As the Fanbulance honked its way down Coupeville’s Front Street, a crowd of Seahawks fans tailed behind.

The group, chanting “Re-peat” and “Sea-hawks” until they reached the end of the Coupeville Wharf, led the first local rally of the postseason.

The decked out ambulance and fans were part of a rally that took place Sunday afternoon. The group marched from the elementary school down to the wharf in the wind and rain.

Put on by the Whidbey Sea Hawkers, the Whidbey Island branch of the team’s official booster club, the rally drew a crowd of about 40 people — and a few dogs dressed in Seahawks green and blue.

One of the dressed up dogs was Willy D., named after Russell Wilson.

Willy’s owner, Jeanine Dyer, a Seahawks fan, said the “D” stands for Eric Dickerson, a former St. Louis Rams  player whom her husband is a fan of.

After the crowd made its way to the end of the wharf, they walked back, cheering at cameras taking photos and videos.

Gwendolyn Burtis, 4, cheered with shiny green and blue pom-poms and a bright green scarf.

Chelsie Burtis, Gwendolyn’s mother, said, “She loves watching football with papa.”

While Gwendolyn has only been a fan for four years, her grandfather, Larry Ankey, has been a fan since the team’s inception in 1976.

When asked if he was excited about the team’s second possible Super Bowl win, Ankey said, “Oh hell yeah.”

Ankey said he went and saw one of the first games the Seahawks played in the Kingdome, the now-demolished stadium they shared with the Mariners before getting their own stadium, Century Link.

He added that he thinks the Hawks will get their second championship in two years.

“We’re kicking butt,” Ankey said. “It’s gonna be a repeat.

“It took us this long to get one; we’re gonna make it stick.”

Other upcoming rallies in the area are: 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Deception Pass, which will end at Flyers in Oak Harbor and is organized by the Whidbey Sea Hawkers, and 2-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Louie-G’s in Oak Harbor.

The rally at Louie-G’s will feature memorabilia raffles, Seahawks gear for sale, a football skill toss, free hot dogs, temporary tattoos and face painting, and a 12th Man aerial town photo at 4 p.m. The proceeds from the raffle and from the airbrush tattoo booth will be going to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Island County.
