Students past and present will have one last chance this weekend to reminisce a popular camp on Orcas Island.

A reunion at Camp Moran will take place Saturday, Sept. 26.

“Basically, everybody is invited who has been coming to Camp Moran,” said Linda Sheridan, former director of the camp’s environmental learning center.

The camp has been a popular experience for sixth-graders attending Oak Harbor schools. Each spring, the students would venture up to the camp for a five-day-long excursion that included environmental learning activities, games and campfire songs.

Sheridan said the Oak Harbor School District’s participation was crucial in getting the environmental learning center off the ground. For decades, hundreds of students from Oak Harbor spent the week at Camp Moran. Then, in the 1990s, the learning center began; staff was hired to provide learning programs and cook meals for the students. Sheridan said that 595 students participated in programs last spring.

However, the learning center was a budget casualty in the most recent legislative session and Sheridan finished up her position as director before taking a new job on Orcas Island.

Check in for the reunion begins at 1 p.m. Activities start at 2 p.m. with canoeing and nature games for children. During that time, people can purchase the camping gear park officials are selling throughout the day. People attending the reunion can enjoy a rousing game of camouflage in the woods. Following that, there will be a picture show beginning at 6 p.m. and camp fires starting at 7 p.m.

While the environmental learning center is closed, the buildings at Camp Moran are still available for renting.

If people choose to stay the night, they can rent a cabin for just $10.
