The North Whidbey Little League Rockies and Dodgers each lost in the semifinals and finished third in their respective 10-team tournaments Friday, June 7.

The Rockies fell to the South Skagit Giants 6-1 at the Tesarik Tournament in Sedro-Woolley, and the Dodgers lost 10-0 to Sedro-Woolley’s E&E Lumber in Oak Harbor’s Andrade Tournament.

In the Rockies’ game, the two teams battled through a scoreless tie until the Giants erupted for six runs in the fourth inning. The Giants mixed six hits, one a home run, and three errors for the half dozen runs.

The Rockies picked up their lone run in the bottom of the fourth. Micah Franklin singled, moved up on a walk and wild pitch and scored on Connor Buenaventura’s ground out.

Rockies tried to rally in the fifth and sixth, but left two runners stranded each inning.

Trevor Sheils, Buenaventura and Andrew Dixon collected the only other Rockie hits.

The Rockies received several strong defensive plays. Hunter Hogarth doubled off a runner at first after catching a fly ball. Joe Dixon ran down a fly in deep center and fired home to nail a runner trying to score.

In the Dodgers’ loss, it was just one of those games, according to coach Jerry Newton.

“We hit the ball where they were and they hit the ball where we were not,” he said.

Newton added, “I’m very proud how my team performed throughout the Andrade Tournament – six games in seven days, four wins, two losses.”
