Record-setting performances helped five Coupeville High School track team members qualify for the state track meet with top-six finishes at the tri-district championships Saturday, May 18, at King’s High School in Shoreline.

The state meet is Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25, at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

The five include girl hurdler Madison Tisa-McPhee and four girls relay members, Makana Stone, Jai’Lysa Hoskins, Sylvia Hurlburt and Marisa Etzell.

Junior Josiah Campbell of the boys team missed earning a state trip by finishing seventh in the 100 meters by the slightest of margins.

Campbell and the sixth-place finisher, Logan Moose of Eatonville, were clocked in identical times, 11.85, but Moose won the state berth based on a photo review.

Senior Tisa-McPhee set a school record, 48.01, in the 300 hurdles while placing fourth. She also ran second in the 100 hurdles in 16.13.

The girls 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams posted new Coupeville High School records to secured state spots.

In the 4×100, senior Hoskins, sophomore Etzell and freshmen Hurlburt and Stone ran a 51.31 and placed fourth.

Tisa-McPhee, Hoskins, Hurlburt and Stone placed third in the 4×200 in 1:47.27, less than .2 seconds out of first.

In other girls finals action, Stone finished eighth in the 200 (27.15); Rachel Wenzel placed 12th in the javelin (88-09); and Kirsten Pelroy, Hoskins, Etzell and Stone took eighth in the 4×400 (4:21.36).

For the boys, Campbell was 13th in the triple jump (35-10.75) and junior Nick Streubel was 13th in the shot put (42-03.5).

Coach Randy King said, “Very excited about our day. The girls really showed up at crunch time with their best performances.”

He added, “Josiah Campbell in the 100 gave it a great shot. Tough to lose out to state on the basis of a photo finish when you posted the same times down to the 100th of a second.”

In the tri-district team standings, the Coupeville girls finished 12th with 26 points; King’s won the 25-team meet with 97. Campbell earned two points for the boys, good for 20th. King’s won handily with 112.

Heading into the state meet, Tisa-McPhee owns the state’s fifth-best 1A time in the 100 hurdles and eighth best in the 300.

The 4×200 team’s time is fourth best and the 4×100 team’s seventh.

Tisa-McPhee also qualified for state as a sophomore and placed eighth in the 100 hurdles in 16.64.
