Prep teams begin postseason action

It doesn’t capture the nation’s attention like March Madness, but it is tournament time for the Oak Harbor and Coupeville high school athletic teams.

The Coupeville baseball team (10-9) gets things rolling in the eight-team, double-elimination 1A district tournament at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Meridian (4-8, 4-11).

The second round is Thursday at 4 p.m. at Blaine’s Pipeline Field, and the tournament concludes Saturday at Blaine.

Teams will need to win two games to finish among the top four and advance to the tri-district tournament.

The Coupeville soccer team (4-8-1, 5-8-1) travels to Mount Baker (4-7-1, 5-10-1) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, to open its district tournament.

Losers in the first round of the eight-team tournament are eliminated. Winners qualify for the tri-district tournament and continue in the district tournament to determine seeding.

The Coupeville track team goes to King’s in Shoreline at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 8, for the Cascade Conference championships.

The sub-district meet is 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, and 5 p.m. Friday, May 14, at Lynden Christian.

Oak Harbor’s postseason starts with the 3A soccer district tournament at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the home of the higher seed. Seeding has not yet been determined. The tournament continues May 13, 15 and 17.

Four soccer teams from the Wesco North and four from the Wesco South meet in a double-elimination tournament; three move on.

The Oak Harbor boys golf team journeys to Kayak Point Golf Course in Stanwood for the Western Conference championships at 11 a.m. Monday, May 12.

The boys district golf meet is noon Monday, May 19, and 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the Everett Golf and Country Club.

The Wildcat girls host the Wesco golf tournament at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at the Whidbey Golf Club. Then they tee it up for the district finals at the Snohomish Golf Course at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, and 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 21.

Coupeville’s lone golfer, Christine Fields, plays in the district tournament at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at the North Bellingham Golf Course.

The Coupeville tennis team joins Blaine, Friday Harbor,  host South Whidbey and several individuals from schools without full teams in the 1A district tournament at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13.

Oak Harbor begins the tennis postseason at the Wesco North tournament in Stanwood at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, and Wednesday, May 14.

The district tournament is also in Stanwood at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, and Wednesday, May 21.

Oak Harbor takes part in Western Conference track championships are 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, and 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, at Marysville’s Quil Ceda Stadium. The district meet is May 21 and 23 at Shoreline Stadium.

The Coupeville softball team (4-11), like its baseball team, plays in an eight-team, double-elimination district tournament. Two wins will earn a tri-district berth.

The softball tournament is 4 p.m. Friday, May 16, and noon Saturday, May 17, at Sedro-Woolley’s Janiki Fields.
