The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a pilot who was allegedly intoxicated and made an unauthorized landing at the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station on Aug. 14.

Mike Welding, public affairs officer at the base, reported the man was piloting a Cessna 120 and landed on an Ault Field runway. The pilot is a resident of the San Juan Islands.

Base security immediately apprehended the man after he landed his aircraft. He was eventually turned over to the police. Welding said the FAA is now investigating the incident.

Navy security twice contacted the Island County Sheriff’s Office that night to perform a breathalyzer test on the pilot — who appeared intoxicated — but the deputies were unable to respond because of a more serious incident, according to the sheriff’s office.
