Dr. Suzanne Bond, who served as Coupeville School District superintendent from 1996-2002, will be recognized by Western Washington University with an Award for Professional Excellence from the Woodring College of Education.

Dr. Bond was nominated for the award by current superintendent Bill Myhr, school board president Valerie Wiley, and current and former district administrators and teachers. Nomination letters commented on Dr. Bond’s high professional standards, exemplary programs she developed and her constant advocacy for learning. Accomplishments during her tenure included: focusing on the personal side of learning, summarized by the phrase “a heart for kids;” revising the district’s Strategic Plan; initiating a food service program and collaborating with other agencies to benefit the district.

Jon Wollschlager has worked for Oak Harbor Parks Department for more than two years. One of his projects has been to remove planting stakes from trees at the city’s recycling center. Recently, Mayor Patty Cohen joined Wollschlager at the recycling center when he removed the last stake. Wollschlager takes a lot of pride in his work and wants the city of Oak Harbor to look its best. Last fall he was responsible for planting many of the bulbs that are blooming now.

Staff Sergeant Yvonne Lough (Vonnie Palmer) is serving at an undisclosed site in the Middle East; she is a 1989 graduate of Oak Harbor High School. Her usual duty station is Albuquerque, N.M. She left behind her husband Russ, a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and son Gavin.

Yvonne was born in Coupeville and raised in Oak Harbor. Her grandparents are Lawrence (Doc) Palmer, Minnie (Van Rensum) and Doris Smith, all of Oak Harbor. Her parents are Richard Palmer, Janice (Palmer) Hedstrom and Don Hedstrom.

Yvonne joined the Air Force in 1992. While at her last duty station in Arizona, she earned an accredited certificate in cardiovascular respiratory therapy. This enables her to work on call in civilian hospitals. She also earned a bachelors degree in business administration in New Mexico.

Her family is very proud of her. She is one of many in the U.S. military fighting for others’ freedom and Yvonne’s family care about them all.

Seattle Pacific University has released its Winter Quarter Dean’s List. Students on the list have completed at least 12 credits and attained a 3.50 or higher GPA. Local students named to the list are Theresa Mae LaLanne of Coupeville and Oak Harbor residents Megan Louise Bartlett, Jessica Jansen, Kyle John Kingma and Jennifer Lynn Tesch.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Thomas M. Stanalonis, son of Luz M. Stanalonis of Oak Harbor, is participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom in the Arabian Gulf while assigned to the guided missile destroyer USS Donald Cook, homeported in Norfolk, Va. He joined the Navy in February 1997.
