Recently, 15 members of Mary Vanderzicht’s family gathered at Harrison Hot Springs in Canada for a family get-together. Everyone had a good time as there was amusement for everyone. While there, the family celebrated the 10th birthday of granddaughter Julie Gets with a barbecue.

One of Mary’s grandsons, Brandon Meno, is a U.S. Army captain serving in Iraq.

Oak Harbor Reads Committee met Sept. 5 to discuss the committee’s next book choice. The group plans to list five titles in October; community voting will end. Nov. 30. Early in December, the selected title will be announced.

Patricia Gardner, with her lhasa apso Ginger, and Gloria and Howard Thomas with their miniature pinscher, Ensign, celebrated their dogs’ birthdays Aug. 30. A hot dog potluck was held at Patricia’s home. Guests included Gloria and Chuck Wessel with Reggie, Karen and Ben Bess with Piper, Jan Buehler, Diane Olson, Kathy and Berry Rix, Barbara and Tom Luehr and Roxanne and Jim Terry.

Concordia Lutheran Church installed their new pastor, the Rev. Juan Palm, Sept. 7. Palm comes to Whidbey Island from Minnesota.

Wendy Balster and Chad Vivoli, recently engaged, are planning a spring wedding.

Trygve and Kristen Johnson, newlyweds, were honored with a reception Sept. 5, at First Reformed Church. The couple were married Aug. 2, in Falls Church, Va.

If you’ve missed the Shifty Sailors this summer, you have a chance to hear them this weekend. In what could be the group’s “reunion” since six of their group toured overseas, their rollicking antics will be on the banks of the Skagit, not the Baltic.

La Conner Classic for antique yachts, collector cars, trailerable boats and steamboats will be held at La Conner Marina , Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13-14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

The Shifty Sailors will perform at noon, followed by the W.T. Preston Dixieland Band at 2 p.m. each day. Shifty Sailors will first perform at the beer garden stage, then travel the docks and La Conner’s downtown area. W.T. Preston Band will be at the beer garden stage.

Members of Oak Harbor Emblem Club are busy preparing for their second annual High Tea Saturday, Sept. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m, at Oak Harbor Elks Lodge. Tickets are $10 and are available from members or call 675-2313.

Oak Harbor Education Foundation will be serving breakfast but it won’t be in bed. The group’s annual Breakfast for Education is set for Sept. 23, from 7 to 9 a.m., at the CPO Club. The cost is $15 per person and all funds raised benefit Oak Harbor schools.
