Oak Harbor’s Rep Fitness takes on world group record

Rep Fitness in Oak Harbor is joining an effort to break a world record for the largest group workout Jan. 3.

The event, which will start at noon at Rep Fitness, 3075 N. Oak Harbor Road, will span 11 countries and thousands of individual groups are expected to participate.

“This is the time of year people use to re-establish their goals,” said Steven Schultz, Rep Fitness trainer and local organizer for the event.

Schultz said the aim of the event is to help people kick-start their fitness regime and help combat obesity for a good cause. For each person who attends the workout, event sponsor Visalus will donate 30 kids meals through their Project 10 Kids program.

“It just raises awareness,” Schultz said. “People can come together and they know their hour spent sweating will feed a kid for 30 days.”

The company achieved the World’s Largest Simultaneous Flash Mob in 2012.

“We really believe we can break the world record,” Visalus co-founder Blake Mallen said in promotional materials.

Schultz said participants can prepare for the boot-camp-style workout by dressing in casual active wear.

Rep Fitness, which opened in January 2014, specializes in personal training by appointment only and is owned by Oak Harbor graduates Kyle Isaacson and Tyson Van Dam.

“Everyone who works here grew up here,” Shultz said.
