A 24-year-old Oak Harbor man who broke into an apartment to beat his ex-girlfriend in October was recently sent to prison.

Jacob Jungwirth pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court Nov. 29 to assault in the second degree, a felony domestic violence charge.

Judge Alan Hancock followed the sentence recommendation worked out under the plea bargain and sent Jungwirth to prison for a year and three months. The judge also barred Jungwirth from any contact with the victim for 10 years.

Deputy Ron Hofkamp with the Oak Harbor Police Department investigated the assault that occurred Oct. 9 at an apartment where the 22-year-old victim lived with her friend.

According to Hofkamp’s report, Jungwirth and another man pushed their way into the residence. The woman ran into her room and locked it, but Jungwirth kicked the door open and started hitting and choking her.

Before he left, Jungwirth allegedly took his ex-girlfriend’s cell phone and the house phone, the report states.

Two days later, deputies responded to a report that Jungwirth pulled the woman out of a car and beat her up on West Beach Road, according to the report. The woman refused to cooperative with the deputies.

Three days after that, police responded to a report of a “verbal domestic” at the women’s apartment and arrested Jungwirth for the previous assault.
