“Police say Roger Wipf assaulted his girlfriend after she thwarted a possible suicide attempt by wrestling a shotgun from his grasp last fall.Wipf, a 47-year-old Oak Harbor man, was charged with third-degree assault and possession of methamphetamine in Island County Court Jan. 12.Oak Harbor Police Officer Robert Dickinson wrote in an offense report that he and two other officers responded to a 911 hang-up call from Wipf’s SW Eighth Avenue home Aug. 7. A woman covered in blood was in the driveway, carrying a speaker to a car.The woman was uncooperative with Dickinson when he tried to treat the severe puncture wound on the side of her head. She told him that she did not want to get Wipf in trouble and said she fell against a door and cut her head open when she and Wipf were fighting.But the woman later cooperated with another officer and told a different story: Wipf blew up at her that afternoon because she asked about his injured foot. He pushed her out the door, so she went to her daughter’s house. Wipf called her there later and said he was going to shoot himself. She returned to his house and discovered him on the back porch holding a .22 rifle, which he shot in the air.She went to hide his shotgun from him, but he caught her and threw her on the bed. They struggled over the gun until he pushed her back, causing her to fall and hit her head. He threw stuff at her and struck her in the side of the head with a framed picture, spilling her blood onto the carpet.Wipf, on the other hand, told police that there was nothing wrong and that his girlfriend was upset with their relationship. He said he told her she could just leave. After he was arrested and taken to jail, Dickinson wrote that a jailer searched Wipf and found a baggy on him with a small amount of methamphetamine.The police notified Island Mental Health about Wipf’s behavior. He was held on $10,000 bail and was involuntarily committed to a hospital in Sedro-Woolley for a mental health evaluation. “
