A 24-year-old Oak Harbor man is accused of breaking into an apartment and beating his ex-girlfriend, court documents indicate.

Prosecutors charged Jacob Jungwirth in Island County Superior Court Oct. 19 with assault in the second degree, a felony domestic violence charge.

Deputy Ron Hofkamp with the Oak Harbor Police Department investigated the alleged assault that occurred Oct. 9 at an apartment where the 22-year-old victim lived with her friend.

According to Hofkamp’s report, Jungwirth and another man pushed their way into the residence. The woman ran into her room and locked it, but Jungwirth kicked the door open and started hitting and choking her, the detective wrote.

Before he left, Jungwirth allegedly took his ex-girlfriend’s cell phone and the house phone, the report states.

Two days later, deputies responded to a report that Jungwirth had pulled the woman out of a car and beat her up on West Beach Road, according to the report. The woman refused to cooperative with the deputies.

Three days after that, police responded to a report of a “verbal domestic” at the women’s apartment and arrested Jungwirth for the previous assault. He denied that he had assaulted the woman and said she probably got beat up by someone else, the report states.

If convicted of the charge against him, Jungwirth could face up to a year and eight months in prison under the standard sentencing range.
