A Veterans Day ceremony to honor those who have served and those who are currently serving in the armed forces of the United States will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11, at the Oak Harbor High School Performing Arts Center.

This will be the sixth annual community-wide event which is sponsored by the Oak Harbor Area Council, Navy League of the United States. Each year communities across the country honor those who have served under the broad theme of “Honoring our Nation’s Heroes.” The local theme this year is “Honoring the Heroes Among Us.”

Veterans Day is celebrated the same day as the former Armistice Day, inaugurated to commemorate the end of World War I at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year.

This year’s ceremony will feature a musical salute to the veterans with performances by the Daybreak Trio, the Chancel Choir of the First United Methodist Church, the Oak Harbor High School Chamber Choir, the Coupeville High School band and the All-Island Community Band. Additionally, the program will feature the OHHS NJROTC Color Guard and the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge flag folding ceremony. Opening remarks will be delivered by Mayor Jim Slowik.
