No problems reported as Deception Pass bridges undergo work

Work on the bridges at Deception Pass is right on schedule, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Deception Pass and Canoe Pass bridges are scheduled to be closed from 7:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. so that contractors can repave it. The first night of the closure was Sunday and the paving should done by Friday morning, July 17.

Island County Sheriff Mark Brown said he isn’t aware of any problems related to the bridge closure, though he’s heard that hotels on the Anacortes side were full this week.

Tom Pearce, spokesman for state Transportation, said the work is going well. About half of the bridge was already re-paved as of Tuesday morning.

Pearce explained that contractors used grinding machines to remove most of the asphalt. Workers will inspect the concrete bridge deck exposed by the work and make necessary repairs.

He said people driving over the bridge during the day should be prepared for a rough ride with bumps at the joints.

Extra sailings were added to the Clinton-to-Mukilteo ferry route during the nighttime closures, but the run between Coupeville and Port Townsend is unchanged.

Vehicles taking the ferry from Port Townsend to Coupeville after the 5:15 p.m. sailing will not be able to cross the Deception Pass Bridge. Drivers should plan to use the Clinton/Mukilteo ferry and Interstate 5 as an alternate route to travel north, according to the DOT.

The extra additional trips are:

l Leaving Clinton at 9 p.m., 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 a.m.

l Leaving Mukilteo at 9:30 p.m., 2, 3 and 4 a.m.

The bridge work is the last portion of a project to repave State Highway 20, from Frostad Road on Whidbey Island to Sharpes Point on Fidalgo Island.
