Wreck at curve injuries two

Two people were injured in what police describe an alcohol-related accident on Heller Road early Sunday morning, according to the Island County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Lane Campbell reported that 32-year-old Rachael Lawson of Oak Harbor was driving a 2002 Volkswagen Passat northbound on Heller Road and failed to negotiate a curve at Ault Field Road.

The car went off the road, through a small wooded area, hit a couple of trees and landed on its top next to the CPO Club parking lot, the deputy said. The accident was reported at 3:38 a.m.

Lawson and a male passenger were both injured and transported to Whidbey General Hospital for treatment. Campbell said Lawson’s injuries required surgery and the man had a broken collar bone.

Campbell said the cause of the accident is under investigation, but it appeared to be caused by alcohol and high speed.

Element closed for nine days

The Washington State Liquor Control Board suspended the liquor license of a popular Oak Harbor nightclub for nine days following two public safety violations.

The Element, located on Bayshore Drive, is not allowed to serve alcohol from 10 a.m. on Nov. 1 to 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 10.

The Element received a violation for “allowing an apparently intoxicated person to possess liquor” on July 19.

The club got a five-day suspension for the violation, which will be served consecutive with a four-day suspension as a result of a March 21 violation.

In that case, the Element got in trouble for “allowing minors to frequent / consume liquor.” The club will be able to sell non-alcoholic products during the suspension.

Call the state’s tip line at 1-888-838-3956 to report illegal activity in liquor-licensed establishments.
