Torpedo gate work begins

Construction to renovate the Torpedo Road gate located off Crescent Harbor Road, one of two entry control points for the Seaplane Base, begins this week and will continue through the Thanksgiving holiday.

The gate is being renovated to allow for better traffic flow of private and commercial, delivery and oversized vehicles and meet current force protection requirements.

Although the gate will remain open, all traffic will be routed through the Commercial Vehicle Inspection (CVI) station and may result in delays when entering or exiting the gate.

“For your own safety, please pay close attention to the directions given by the sentries,” said Kim Martin, base public information officer.

People driving private, non-commercial or oversized vehicles are encouraged to use the Maui Avenue gate off Pioneer Way to ease congestion during this period.

Picnic shows

our appreciation

Military personnel, their families and the general community are invited to the annual Military Appreciation Picnic at Oak Harbor’s Windjammer Park on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 1 to 6 p.m.

The barbecue lunch is free for military personnel and their families, with military ID. Civilian community members who would like to take part in the picnic and show their appreciation for the military are encouraged to attend and can purchase lunch for only $5.

An open-air showing of The Bee Movie will be played on the Comcast Outdoor Cinema following the barbecue.

The Oak Harbor Navy League, City of Oak Harbor and the Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring the picnic. Organizers are gladly accepting monetary donations to offset the cost of food and supplies. For more information, or to sign up to volunteer, please call Heather at 675-3755.

Outdoor burn ban ends Monday

Island County’s outdoor burn ban is lifted effective noon Monday, Sept. 1.

“The reason is obvious,” said Sheriff Mark Brown in making the announcement on a cloudy Friday morning with more rain in the forecast.

The burn ban will be lifted for the unincorporated areas of Island County.

For more information on the permanent burn ban you may contact the Northwest Clean Air Agency at 800-622-4627 or visit www.nwcleanair.org.

If you live in an area where open burning is allowed and want to have a fire you must call 679-7378 to obtain a burn permit. At that time verbal burn permits will be available; written burn permits will be available by appointment starting Sept. 2. Fires under 4-feet in diameter do not require a burn permit.
