Nearly 2,800 Whidbey Island homes are still without power Monday morning after an unusual late summer wind storm pounded the area.

Puget Sound Energy crews are racing to get the lights on and hope to have power restored to everyone by this evening, said Ray Lane, PSE spokesman.

The outages are scattered around the island. At the peak, the utility had a total of 200 outage events that each included multiple homes.

“This was a tricky one,” he said. “We had a lot of trees down and that proved to be an obstacle early on. We couldn’t get places.”

It can be frustrating to customers to see no crews working to the fix the problem. That isn’t necessarily the case, he said.

“Just because you can’t see the crew in your neighborhood doesn’t mean it’s not (getting fixed),” he said. “The equipment can be a distance away.”
