Near sweep in first home meet

Oak Harbor High School has a talented swim team with a mixture of veterans with three years of experience as varsity competitors mixed in with several first-year freshmen.

On Thursday afternoon, the Wildcats hit the water at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool in their first home meet of the season and put on quite a show.

Oak Harbor won every event except for a second-place finish in diving and rolled over Lake Stevens like the proverbial tidal wave, 749 to 634.

“We did well and I’m happy with them,” coach Erika Miller said. “They swam pretty well considering that a lot of them are tired with two meets a week, practice, homework and some of them also swim club as well.”

The 200-meter medley relay team got things going in a hurry with the quartet of Amanda Streubel, Rachel Weinstein, Ciara Hu and Karina Concepcion winning in a time of 2:15.73.

Hu and Concepcion are both freshmen and swam the butterfly and freestyle legs of the race.

“I think I did pretty good, I haven’t looked at the time yet,” Hu said.

Streubel was also a winner in the 200 individual medley, the 100 backstroke and swam the third leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay.

“I did okay. I’m not quite in the shape I want to be but in this race, I just wanted to get my hands on the wall first and I did,” she said about her win in the 200 individual medley.

Weinstein won the 100 breaststroke, the 400 freestyle and was a member of the winning 400 freestyle relay team, while Hu won the 100 butterfly and was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.

Concepcion won the 100 freestyle and was also a member of the 200 free style relay team.

Other individual winners were Carolyn Vasquez in the 50 freestyle and 200 relay and Tori Nickerson in the 200 freestyle.

KeriAnne Wright was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.

“They’re doing well and enjoying themselves, that’s the most important thing,” Miller said.

Nickerson had a great swim in the 200 and overtook her opponent in the final 10 meters to win the race in a time of 2:32.09.

“She went out too fast and I tried to pace myself,” Nickerson said. “I got her in the end, she just didn’t come back hard enough.”

Vasquez said she was happy with her win in the 50 freestyle in a time of 29.80, but she wants to do better.

“It was my best time of the year, but still not where I want to be,” she said. “I’d like to get down to 28.6, that’s the state time.”

Oak Harbor is now 2-1 on the season, having lost a close meet at Kamiak by just nine points.

“Swimmer against swimmer, we beat them by four points but because we didn’t have divers and they did, they won by nine points,” Miller said.

The Wildcats return to action hosting Stanwood at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
