Deputies arrested a mother and son over the weekend on suspicion of running a clandestine drug lab in the bathroom of North Whidbey man’s home while he was living out of state, according to Island County Sheriff Mark Brown.

The homeowner, a “snow bird” who was living in another state during the winter, noticed that his electrical bill for the Whidbey house was suspiciously high, so he asked a neighbor to check it out. On Saturday, the neighbor found what appeared to be a drug lab in a downstairs bathroom and called the police, Brown said.

Deputies found chemicals, glassware and other items consistent with a drug lab. The sheriff’s office called in the Washington State Patrol’s SWAT team to assist in taking down the lab and collecting evidence. The Department of Ecology also helped with the clean-up.

An initial assessment from the state patrol indicates the lab may have been used for making hallucinogenic-type drugs, according to Brown. The chemicals were sent to the state lab for testing.

The investigation led detectives to the housekeeper, 64-year-old Cynthia Lee Wood of Oak Harbor, and her son, Clinton Eric Wood, 29. Brown said they did not have permission to use the home.

Clinton Wood is being held on $40,000 bail on suspicion of violation of the Uniform Controlled Substances Act, malicious mischief in the first degree and residential burglary. Cynthia Wood was ordered held on $25,000 bail on suspicion of first-degree criminal trespass.
