Editor,

More than 60 people arrived at Trinity Lutheran Church on Sunday, Nov. 29 for the Whidbey Paris Climate Vigil to hear speakers from the Quaker, Unitarian Universalist and Evangelical denominations speak about the urgent need for climate justice; join in a rousing rendition of “Sing for the Climate;” and demonstrate along State Highway 525 to the honking of appreciative passersby.

This was one of more than 2,300 actions in 75 countries involving almost one million people united in one voice calling for a 100 percent clean energy future. Professor Joseph Sheldon from the Pacific Rim Institute surprised some by describing the leadership role of evangelical environmentalists, like Dr. Katherine Hayhoe, in promoting climate justice.

Now we await the result of 130 of the world’s leaders meeting in Paris. Our future will be determined by their courage, creativity and commitment as well as our actions and prayers.

The Greening Congregations of Whidbey want to express our gratitude to all who came and contributed to this historic event.
