Methodist Church Handbell Ensemble rings in the holidays

Members of the Coupeville United Methodist Church Handbell Ensemble played Christmas songs for the enjoyment of a group of seniors at the Coupeville HUB last Wednesday.

The ensemble, which consists of 12 regular members, is lead by director Cheryl Waide and plays on the last Sunday of every month during the church’s regular 11 a.m. service.

The group plays 4.5 octaves of Malmark brass bells, and there are 12 different bells in each octave.

“It’s just really a jubilant sound when they’re all playing together,” Waide said. “People really seem to enjoy the bells, especially at Christmas.”

Some of the songs the ensemble played included “Little Drummer Boy and the Carol of the Bells.”

The ensemble’s next appearance will be during the 11 a.m. service on Sunday, Dec. 27,  at the Methodist Church.

The Coupeville HUB meets every Wednesday and some Thursdays at the Methodist Church.

Senior Services of Island County provides a meal at little to no cost for seniors at noon Wednesdays, and each week a different program is provided at 1 p.m.

On some Thursdays the HUB provides a Fall and Injury Prevention program.

The next HUB will be held Wednesday, Jan. 6. Retiring Coupeville Mayor Nancy Conard will call bingo and staff from Senior Services will be available to offer information and assistance for its various programs.
