Merchants drop two

The Whidbey Island Merchants got the hits in the first game of their double-header against Stanwood on Sunday, they just weren’t able to drive across the runs.

Despite getting 10 hits, the Merchants couldn’t generate any runs until pitcher Todd Melnick drilled a home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Melnick’s RBI was the only one of the game for Whidbey, as they lost 11-1 in the first game.

Defensively, Melnick had a solid outing on the mound with 15 strikeouts, but Stanwood was able to make the best of their 16 hits.

Bill Russell ended the game going 2-for-3 with two singles, while Dave Moody went 2-for-4 with two singles.

The Merchants’ luck didn’t improve in the second game, as they fell 13-3.

Don Jenkins struggled on the mound, going three innings, giving up nine earned runs on nine hits. Jenkins had a good day at the plate going 2-for-2 with one RBI.

Whidbey plays a double-header starting at 11 a.m., tomorrow, June 22 at Anacortes, before returning home June 29 to play Bellingham.

The Merchants would like to thank the following sponsors: Alaska U.S.A. Mortgage, Scotties Plumbing, Whidbey Island Ford, Windermere Real Estate and the Oak Harbor Police Association.
