Langley police officer dies

A Langley police officer who died after battling pneumonia was honored with a police procession, a motorcade, a memorial service and a celebration of life ceremony Tuesday on South Whidbey.

Officer Michael Birchfield was 48 years old when he passed away June 6.

Birchfield’s career in law enforcement began and ended at the Langley Police Department. In between, Birchfield worked for the Island County Sheriff’s Office for about 10 years, reaching the rank of detective. He eventually resigned.

Birchfield joined the Navy and served for almost 10 years before pursuing a career in law enforcement, according to his obituary. Besides law enforcement, one of his greatest passions in life was music, having played drums in several rock bands throughout his life.

Birchfield was born and raised in South Bend, Ind. He is survived by his son, Jeremy, and daughter, Fallon, both of Langley. Jeremy and Fallon’s mother, Elizabeth, of Langley, also survives Birchfield. He is also survived by his grandson, Kieran (Bug), who was the apple of his eye and constant buddy the last few years of his life. His sister, Candace of South Bend, Ind.; a brother Tom (Catherine); nephew, TJ and niece, Sadie of Louisville, Ky., also survived him.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Birchfield’s name may be made to the American Lung Association.
