An armed robbery of Walgreens in Oak Harbor March 15 wasn’t exactly a professional job, the police report indicates.

The suspect was caught on the store’s video, he dropped his gun on the way out and he walked to the Safeway store afterward, where he claims he flushed all the stolen medication down the toilet, court documents say.

Prosecutors charged 23-year-old Stephen Allen of Kirkland in Island County Superior Court with robbery in the first degree, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm in the second degree and theft of a firearm.

If convicted of the charges, Allen could face up to five years in prison under the standard sentencing range.

Detective Mike Bailey with the Oak Harbor Police investigated the drugstore holdup. He wrote in his report that the suspect, later identified as Allen, went to the pharmacy just after 10 a.m. and pulled out a small handgun. Allen told the pharmacist to give him all the OxyContin, so the pharmacist handed over seven or eight bottles.

On his way out of the store, Allen ran past another customer, dropped the gun then came back to retrieve it, Bailey wrote.

Allen went to Safeway, where he claimed he flushed the pills, and called a friend who had dropped him off at the Walgreens earlier.

Two hours later, an Island County deputy stopped a car on Hunt Road and took Allen into custody. The car was driven by an 18-year-old Oak Harbor man who had dropped Allen off at the drugstore and picked him up at Safeway, but apparently didn’t know about the robbery.

Later that afternoon, a woman gave police the gun that Allen brandished in the robbery, the report states. She found it at her home, where Allen and the 18-year-old man had been staying.

In an interview with the detective, Allen admitted that he committed the robbery, Bailey wrote. Allen said he was addicted to OxyContin and was getting sick because he hadn’t had any in two days. Allen also admitted that he stole the gun from Green’s Gun Shop on North Whidbey, the report states.
