Island County Elections Office sets special candidate filing period

Central Whidbey residents have a chance to get their names on the general election ballot.

Some Central Whidbey residents interested in running for public office have an opportunity next week to get their names on the general election ballot.

The Island County Elections Office is holding a special three-day filing period for residents to file in special purpose districts without current candidates.

The most high-profile of the available positions on Whidbey Island is the District 1 commissioner on the Port of Coupeville. The current commissioner, David Day, decided not to seek reelection and nobody else signed up for the four-year position during the regular filing period.

In addition, positions are available on water and sewer districts across the island.

The period for filing declarations of candidacy is between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 7 through Wednesday, Aug. 9 Filing may be completed online at www.votewa.gov or in the Island County Elections Office at 400 North Main Street in Coupeville.

Besides the Coupeville port position, the other open positions on Whidbey are:Clinton Water District Position 2, a six-year term

North Whidbey Water District Position 1, a two-year unexpired term

North Whidbey Water District Position 2, a four-year unexpired term

North Whidbey Water District Position 3, a six-year short and full term

Scatchet Head Sewer District Position 1, a six-year short and full term

Scatchet Head Sewer District Position 3, a two-year unexpired term
