Inn’s owners file suit against Oak Harbor

The owners of a hotel in Oak Harbor are suing the city over a flooding issue.

Joel and Barbara Douglas, along with the Coachman Inns of America and Harbor Land Co., filed a complaint for injunctive and declaratory relief and damages in Island County Superior Court earlier this month.

The lawsuit states that the city installed a culvert under Goldie Road “about 120 feet north of the southern parcel with the existing hotel.”

The culvert conveys storm water from Goldie Road and areas west of the road onto a third-party’s property. The water then flows onto the northerly Coachman Inn parcel, the lawsuit states.

The lawsuit claims that the chronic flooding has caused — and continues to cause — water damage at the hotel. It states that the parties asked the city to take action to prevent flooding, but that the city has not responded to the demand.

The plaintiffs are asking for unspecified damages and an injunction prohibiting the discharge of water on the Coachman Inn property.
