Coupeville sophomores Kira Ilyankoff and Tyler King will be representing the Wolves after winning big in the Cascade Conference track championships at Cedarcrest High School in Duvall.

King was crowned the 1,600-meter champion on Wednesday and came back Friday afternoon to add the 800-meter title.

The speedy distance runner finished the race in a time of 1:58.48, out dueling South Whidbey’s Scott Stallman, who finished second at 1:59.21.

After some discussion among coaches King came back about five minutes after his 800-meter victory to try and make it a trifecta, running the 3,200-meter race.

He gave the event a valiant effort but finished second with a time of 9:53.47, a little more than 10 seconds behind the winner, Taylor Guske from Lakewood, who crossed the finish line at 9:43.46.

“He just didn’t have enough time to completely recover from running the 800,” coach Eric Lindberg said.

Ilyankoff, last year’s state runner up in the javelin who has been hobbled for the past few weeks by a knee injury, received some good news before the meet.

“They first told her that she had an ACL injury, a rupture or a tear, so she has been wearing a brace,” Lindberg said. “Then they decided it wasn’t an ACL, just some fluid in the knee so the brace came off.”

As a result, Ilyankoff won the javelin event with a throw of 129-00, more than 25 feet further than her closest competitor.

“What we have to do now is get her back in top shape and ready for the district and state meets,” Lindberg said.

The next stop for Ilyankoff and King is at the Class 1A tri-district meet scheduled for Thursday and Saturday at King’s High School.
