A Level 2 sex offender who would have been living homeless in the Oak Harbor area is heading elsewhere.

Island County Sheriff Mark Brown said he learned late Thursday afternoon that Ace Harris will be released in Snohomish County.

Brown said the Department of Corrections advised him that it had made an error in determining which county Harris would be released. Generally sex offenders are released in the county of their first felony conviction. After conducting further research on Harris’ past, the agency discovered a juvenile felony conviction in Snohomish County.

The Sheriff said he went forward with the community meeting Thursday night at the Oak Harbor Fire Station to inform residents of the change of plans. Because Harris has ties to the Stanwood / Camano Island area, Brown said he will still hold a community meeting on Camano Island.

Harris was classified as a Level 2 sex offender, which means he is considered a moderate risk to reoffend.
