Holiday hoop tournaments: Wildcat girls host Santa Slam, boys go to BCC

It’s holiday hoops time for the Oak Harbor High School girls and boys basketball teams.

The Wildcat girls host their annual Santa Slam Tournament Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 29 and 30, and the boys travel to Bellevue Community College to take part in BCC’s 40th annual Christmas break tournament Tuesday, Dec. 28, through Thursday, Dec. 30.

Anacortes (5-2) and North Thurston (1-5) open the Santa Slam Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 5:40 p.m. Oak Harbor (0-8) challenges Eatonville (3-2) at 7:30.

The two losers meet up Thursday at 5:40, and the winners battle for the title at 7:30.

In the eight-team BCC tournament, Oak Harbor (2-5) meets up with Bear Creak of Redmond (5-1) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Wildcats are opposite South Kitsap (3-3) and Sammamish (6-1). The losers meet Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. and the winners at 5:15. A third game will be played Thursday at a time to be determined.

The other four schools at Bellevue are Renton (3-4), Glacier Peak (5-2), Eastside Catholic (2-4) and Inglemoor (4-2).

Eatonville, the Oak Harbor girls’ opponent, is a perennial state tournament participant. The Cruisers have qualified for the past 13 2A tournaments with a best finish of sixth in 2001.

Bear Creak, the boys’ foe, is a current state 2B power. The Grizzlies were ranked No. 1 most of last year and finished fifth in the state tournament.
