Halloween vandals wreak havoc

Halloween night vandals caused thousands of dollars worth of damage in an Oak Harbor neighborhood.

Capt. Tony Slowik with the Oak Harbor Police Department said the vandalism was extensive in the area of North Oak Harbor Street, from Southeast Third Avenue to the northern end of city limits. The suspected teenage troublemakers broke car windows, shattered the windows of houses and apartments with rocks, and damaged mailboxes.

Officers canvassed the area Wednesday in search of additional victims, potential witnesses and surveillance and doorbell video. Thursday, Chief Kevin Dresker said officers were going through the videos they gathered but hadn’t identified any suspects at that point.

It doesn’t appear that the vandals wore costumes during the Halloween night crime spree.

Dresker said it was clear that a group of people, not just a couple of kids, were involved in the criminal mischief. Similar incidents occurred overnight on Oct. 19 to 20 in the general vicinity, but those were initially thought to be an isolated event. Unfortunately, the area was struck again.

The police are still asking for the community’s assistance in identifying those involved. Home and property owners are being asked to check surveillance and doorbell camera systems for video. Anyone with information is asked to call ICOM Dispatch using the non-emergency phone line, 360-679-9567, or by calling 911.

“The Oak Harbor Police Department is dedicated to community service and safety, and with your help, we can swiftly identify and hold accountable those responsible for these destructive acts,” the police department said in a statement. “Working together we can make our neighborhoods safer and more secure for all residents.”
