Half-dozen shots fired downtown

Police have few clues about gunshots that were fired in downtown Oak Harbor in the midst of an alcohol-fueled fracas last weekend.

Oak Harbor Capt. Rick Wallace said four police officers responded to a report of a disturbance outside of PW Murphy’s bar and restaurant at around 1 a.m. Feb 3. He said employees had ejected several patrons, one of whom was overheard threatening to go get a gun.

The officers were trying to calm down the small crowd on Pioneer Way when they heard five or six shots fired from behind the business. They rushed to the sound of the gunshots but didn’t find any shooter, victim or cartridges.

Later in the morning, a passerby found six spent, .380-caliber shell casings in the area, at the Methodist church.

Wallace said police don’t know why someone shot the gun or if he or she was shooting at a person. It will be difficult to pursue the case unless someone comes forward with a complaint or information, he said.
