Greenbank Farm negotiations end — for now

Months of negotiations concerning the future of the Greenbank Farm ended without any changes being made.

The Greenbank Farm Management Group ending its goal of terminating its management agreement with the farm’s owner, the Port of Coupeville.

The two sides weren’t able to agree on a timeline to complete negotiations and turn management of the farm over to port officials.

The management group wanted to take 12 to 24 months negotiating an end to its 10-year agreement it signed with the port in 2004. Port officials wanted discussions to conclude in September and take over farm operations at the end of the year. They wanted discussions to end then so the change could be worked into next year’s budget.

However, the management group found it couldn’t accommodate the port’s timeline.

“The Greenbank board does not find it feasible to meet the Port’s requested timeline,” said Karen Hutchinson, vice president of the management group while she read a letter during Wednesday morning’s port commissioner meeting.

The management group first decided to end the agreement during a meeting last spring. During that meeting, Laura Blankenship resigned her position as farm director.

Hutchinson said the resignation provided a distraction that prevented the progression of negotiations.

She also said the board members have been working putting on the recent Father’s Day Car Show and the Loganberry Festival. The farm is also getting ready for the Highland Games and the brand-new Quilt Show.

The months of negotiations have caused frustration among some people close to the farm.

“I’m hoping for some revelation,” Issy Olivia said before Hutchinson announced the end of the negotiations. “The non-public negotiation creates a lot of questions and concerns.”

Port Commissioner Benye Weber agreed with Olivia.

Weber appeared to accept the management group’s move to end negotiations and the port will send a letter to the management group.

With the end of the negotiations, the management group will have to continue with the original terms of the agreement.

The group recently hired Cheryl Sagmeister as new operations manager and Paul Samuelson as a new consultant.
