Fifth Manni makes Eagle Scout rank

Five Eagle Scouts in one nuclear family may not be a record, but if so it will take quite a bit of “Googling” to find out.

A search of the Internet reveals a lot of Eagle Scout families, but few if any can match the Manni family in Oak Harbor.

John Manni, a member of Troop 97, recently earned his Eagle Scout rank, joining brothers David, Nathan and Matthew in achieving the highest rank in scouting.

At the head of this Eagle Scout clan is Kenneth Manni, a long-time Oak Harbor attorney, who joined the Boy Scouts in his hometown of Cranston, Rhode Island, where he became an Eagle Scout.

Kenneth Manni is quick to credit his wife, Eleanor, with supporting their boys through the long years it takes to work one’s way up to Eagle Scout. And while their daughter Jessica Marie, 28, didn’t belong to the Boy Scouts, she is a success in her own right. She is program director at Franciscan University in Ohio, where her brothers Matthew and John are attending school. David Manni is attending Ave Maria School of Law in Michigan, and Nathan is a partner is his father’s law firm in Oak Harbor.

Boys Scouts spend years climbing the organization’s various levels, with Eagle Scout as the goal for the most ambitious of them. Finally, they have to conceive and execute a community service project, and then pass a board exam.

John, the newest Eagle Scout, did his project at Deception Pass State Park under the watchful eye of “Ranger Rick” Blank, who also oversaw the Eagle Scout projects of David and Nathan Manni. Thanks to these Manni boys, the park’s trails and beaches are vastly improved.

The other son, Matthew, did a project involving three large crucifixes for a local church.

Since the rank of Eagle Scout was created in 1911, only about 5 percent of Boy Scouts have achieved it, in the process showing that they personify the goals of scouting, including citizenship training, character development and personal fitness.
