What started out to be a comfortable game ended as a nail-biter as the Coupeville girls’ basketball team edged visiting Friday Harbor 41-37 Tuesday.

Megan Smith popped in three 3-pointers and the Wolf defense shut down the Wolverines as Coupeville cruised to a 15-5 lead early in the second quarter.

Friday Harbor’s offense finally got going and the Wolverines trimmed the lead to 23-19 at the half.

Coupeville found itself in foul trouble in the third quarter and starters Marie Hesselgrave and Smith sat much of the second half. With the two on the bench, the Wolves’ lead disappeared and Friday Harbor took a 31-30 lead and the momentum.

Coupeville, however, wrestled back control of the game and finished with an 11-6 run to snare the win, its sixth in seven games.

Smith finished with 14 points, and Ashley Manker recorded a double-double, scoring 11 and pulling down 14 rebounds.

Katie Smith had four points and three steals; Cassidi Rosenkrance had two points and four assists; Hesselgrave six points, six rebounds and three assists; Kendra O’Keefe three points; and Courtney Arnold one point.
