“A Camano Island couple whose twin teen-aged sons were killed in a car accident in 1997 are suing the driver of the car, his family and another family who owned the car.Pamela and Derek Champney filed the complaint for damages for wrongful death and destruction of the parent-child and familial relationships in Island County Superior Court July 21.The complaint is against Alex Lemaich, who was the driver of the car, and his parents. Also Marshal Bamber, who loaned the car to Lemaich, and his father Mark Bamber were named in the suit.According to the complaint, Kevin and James Champney, 16-year-old twin brothers, were in the back seat of the 1983 Chevrolet Malibu which Lemaich was driving. Lemaich lost control on North Camano Drive on Camano Island and went over an embankment.Kevin Champney was killed instantly, the complaint states, but James was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he died a few hours later. During the period before he died, the complaint states that he suffered because he knew his brother had been killed.The complaint alleges that Lemaich was negligent by failing to maintain control … failing to maintain a proper speed, failing to maintain appropriate lane travel.The Champneys are asking for damages for economic loss, loss of future earnings, funeral expenses, loss of love, pain and suffering, emotional distress, destruction of parent-child relationship and other several other issues.You can reach News-Times reporter Jessie Stensland at jstensland@whidbeynewstimes.com or call 675-6611.”
