The Coupeville High School tennis team was edged 3-2 by South Whidbey in the season opener for the Wolves Tuesday, Sept. 17, in Langley.

Coupeville’s match with Friday Harbor slated for Friday, Sept. 13, was cancelled because the Wolverines couldn’t fill a full team.

While Tuesday’s match was the first of the season for Coupeville, it was the fourth for the Falcons, who evened their mark at 2-2. All four of South Whidbey’s contests this year have been decided by one point.

Coupeville picked up its wins in first singles and first doubles.

Sebastian Davis stopped Jack Hood 6-4, 6-4.

Coach Ken Stange said, “Sebastian played an outstanding match. He consistently outlasted Jack, playing several points that went longer than 15 shots. He also showed a bit of power. As he learns to blend the power and consistency, he will be quite formidable on the singles court.”

The doubles win came from Aaron Curtin and Ben Etzell 6-4, 6-4.

“Aaron and Ben played a solid first match, too,” Stange said. “They used a combination of power and finesse. Big serves set up angled volleys, and both boys used their athleticism to cover the entire court.”

In second singles, Dalton Martin fell 6-0, 6-0.

Stange said, “Dalton is in his first year of tennis and he shows noticeable improvement each time he steps onto the court.”

Brian Norris and Kyle Bodamer dropped second doubles 6-0, 6-3; and Brandon Kelley and Jack McCormick lost in third doubles 6-1, 6-1.

“Brian and Kyle showed signs of life during the second set, and should be able to find a way to win,” Stange said. “Brandon and Jake are learning to play together. Once they blend their games into a single entity, they should find a way to win as well.”

Coupeville entertains Archbishop Murphy at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18.
