Expect a busy holiday weekend on ferry run

Washington State Ferries is busy on all holiday weekends, and Labor Day weekend is no exception.

So far this summer in June and July, ridership has increased 2 percent from last year on the Port Townsend-to-Coupeville route.

State Ferries reported that over 193,380 customers traveled the route in June and July. Riders should expect a spike in the number of travelers over the Labor Day holiday.

On Monday, Sept. 5, all Port Townsend-to-Coupeville vessels will sail on the Sunday sailing schedule.

Ferries officials recently heralded significant increases in ridership statewide.

From March to June of 2016, ridership increased systemwide and on some routes is returning to levels not seen since 2000, the busiest year on record.
