Engle Field development discussed

Public can give input at school board meeting on Jan. 22

Should plans go through, there will be several improvements made to the new athletic fields at the corner of Engle and Terry roads in Coupeville.

Before that can happen, however, the public has to give their opinion of the proposed plans. That chance will take place later this month during the Coupeville School Board meeting.

The school district is required to hold the public comment session to obtain a permit from the county, said Coupeville School District Superintendent Bill Myhr.

He said the work, which should begin this spring, will make the baseball and practice soccer field more permanent.

The work includes reseeding the fields and adding fencing around the baseball field.

School officials had to move the fields when construction of the new high school began. It’s being built on land adjacent to the current, dilapidated high school building.

Myhr said staff is also looking to add a parking lot. The new lot would not only be used during baseball games but it would improve the parking situation for spectators attending games at nearby Mickey Clark Field.

When the parking lot could be installed is an unanswered question.

Myhr said there hasn’t been any money budgeted for a new parking lot. Officials are waiting for the completion of the new high school.

Any money left over from the high school construction would help fund other priority projects such as the parking lot and the covered play area at Coupeville Elementary School.

The discussion takes place during the school board meeting scheduled Monday, Jan. 22, 7 p.m., at the Coupeville Elementary School Library.
