Klahowya used a monstrous 11-run fifth inning to come from behind and defeat the host Coupeville High School softball team 16-6 in six innings in the conference finale Wednesday, May 4.

Coupeville erased a 3-0 Eagle lead with two runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth, then Klahowya’s offense exploded for the win.

Coupeville (3-6, 8-9) finished third in the Olympic League and will compete in the district tournament May 20 and 21 in Tacoma. Before heading off to the playoffs, the Wolves will play two 4 p.m. non-league games on the road.

Coupeville goes to Bellevue Christian (7-6) Tuesday, 10, and then to La Conner (5-9) Monday, May 16.

Coupeville beat Bellevue Christian in 17-16 during a wind storm March 23. There is also a good chance the two schools will meet in the first round of district.

Klahowya defeated Coupeville twice earlier in the season, and it looked like the Wolves were about to get some payback Wednesday.

The Eagles scored single runs in each of the first three innings, then Coupeville grabbed the momentum.

In the bottom of the third, Kailey Kellner walked and eventually scored on Tiffany Briscoe’s fielder’s choice. Briscoe then scored on an error off the bat of Lauren Rose.

The Wolves took a 6-3 lead with four runs in the fourth. Sarah Wright reached on an error, and then with two outs, Kellner also got on board on an error.  Singles by Veronica Crownover and Briscoe and another error produced the runs.

The lead didn’t last long. The Eagles sent 16 batters to the plate in the fifth, slugged six hits (including a home run), received six walks, forced two errors and scored 11 runs.

Klahowya (5-2, 10-6) tacked on two more runs in the sixth.

Crownover collected three hits for the Wolves; Briscoe and Wright also singled.

“My hats off to these girls,” coach Kevin McGranahan said of his team. “The stayed in it the whole game, even when they got down.”
