Drones used for Oak Harbor commercials

Potential visitors to Oak Harbor will get a bird’s-eye view of what the city has to offer in the coming months.

Three promotional videos are being produced using drone technology to showcase the city’s historic downtown, outdoor enthusiasts and the 2015 Fourth of July fireworks show from an aerial perspective.

The downtown and outdoors videos will be shortened into commercials for a cable television audience that will start appearing next year, said Christine Cribb, executive director of the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce.

“People in Oak Harbor may not see their commercial,” said Cribb. “We are going to target the Canadian market and Seattle market.”

Cribb said target audiences were identified through the chamber’s own research with help from a committee. Five generations of travelers will be reached through marketing efforts online and through television commercials, Cribb said.

The commercials will be 30-second spots.

Oak Harbor-based Vivid Aerial Ascent was hired by the Oak Harbor chamber from grant money obtained through the city’s 2 percent lodging tax fund.

Longer versions of the videos will appear on YouTube and websites for marketing purposes, Cribb said.

Paul Skinner’s aerial media firm received an exemption from the Federal Aviation Administration to be able to use drones for commercial purposes.

Skinner hired a videographer from Seattle to help produce the videos.

The outdoors enthusiast video is complete, showing aerial footage of runners, cyclists, paddleboarders, and sailboaters in a variety of picturesque settings.

Skinner’s aerial footage of the city’s waterfront fireworks show will be shown online only.

He said the downtown commercial is in the editing and production stages.

“We’re doing full video production,” Skinner said.”It’s not just aerials.

“I think it’s a great new modern way for us to promote tourism.”
